Varsity Jacket Guide

A varsity jacket is a traditional school and team jacket known for its letter or patches on the chest. It typically features ribbed cuffs, collar, and waistband and is designed for layering.

A letterman jacket is another name for a varsity jacket. The term refers to the chenille letter that represents a school or achievement.

In most cases, there is no difference. Both terms describe the same style of jacket.

A varsity jacket typically includes:

  • Ribbed collar, cuffs, and waistband
  • Letters or patches (often chenille)
  • A structured, classic fit

Many traditional styles use a wool body with contrast sleeves.

Varsity jackets are commonly made from:

  • Wool
  • Genuine leather sleeves (traditional styles)
  • Ribbed knit trim

Some versions use satin for a lighter feel.

Yes. You do not need to be an athlete to wear one. Many people choose varsity jackets for style or personal expression.

Varsity jackets often use heavier materials, detailed stitching, and customization like patches and embroidery. Made-to-order production also adds labor and preparation time.
